Youville Hospital's History

Founded by the Sisters of Charity of Montreal (Grey Nuns) in 1895, Youville Hospital has a rich history and legacy of providing compassionate care to those entrusted to us. Our Mission and history remain important to our community, and inspire the care you'll receive and our relationship with your family during your stay at the hospital.

We are a community of hope committed to providing rehabilitative health care and elder services which attend to the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of each person.

Who was St. Marguerite D’Youville?
Marguerite D’Youville was the first Canadian born saint canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1990. Known as the Mother of Universal Charity, Marguerite was known both during her life and after her death as a woman who was inspired to care for all God’s poor. Inspired by her devotion, other women joined in her Mission, founding the Grey Nuns, or Sisters of Charity of Montreal. Marguerite’s vision continues on in the ministries begun by the Grey Nuns and the lay people who work in organizations which continue their ministry in the United States and beyond.

At the urging of a local priest, three Grey Nuns traveled to Cambridge to open Holy Ghost Hospital to care for chronically ill patients. Located in a 24 bed cottage at our current location, they accepted their first patient on February 14, 1895 and began a tradition of providing compassionate care that continues on today. Over time our focus changed from chronic care to rehabilitative care and in 1970 we renamed our hospital in memory of our foundress, Marguerite D’Youville. Though the Grey Nuns are no longer present in the institution, their spirit still inspires our care and provides the legacy we hope to continue through the quality care we provide.
